Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

Interests:

In this course, students who really enjoy reading will have the opportunity to read, read, read.  They will be in a group with other readers and may share their favorite books and encourage others to try them as well.  As a class, we collect gently used books for young people and adults and donate those to the Safe Homes organization so that their clients can have a book of their own to enjoy while they are there and perhaps even take one once they leave.  We spend a day out and about in downtown Spartanburg where we visit the Headquarters Library and have a behind the scenes tour with our County Librarian, Todd Stephens.  We visit a downtown restaurant for lunch, followed by a history walk through downtown with one of our library’s historians, Brad Steinecke.  Our history tour ends at the Hub City Bookshop, where we browse Spartanburg’s only independent and nonprofit bookstore.  One day we view the film, The Book Thief, and of course we prepare our Presentation of Learning.  One part of our Presentation of Learning is compiling and sharing a list of suggested summer reading books for other middle school students.  This is a fun course for bookworms.  I have had two students elect to take it two years in a row!
